Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Just about every one of us has heard about the healthful benefits of adding fish oil to your diet. Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which has been linked to positive effects in the human body. These benefits include lower blood pressure, lower triglycerides and overall cholesterol levels, and even the possibility of reducing the effects of certain types of cancers. The cancers in question include colon, breast, and prostate cancer.

Omega 3 fatty acids have been included in a multitude of medical studies as being very helpful in lowering the risk of heart disease. However, it only includes those individuals that have taken significant amounts of omega-3 over a long period of time. So, what quantity of omega-3 fatty acids are needed to provide an individual with exceptional results?

Perhaps there is no exact answer, however, we need to take a look at some variables before deciding on how much you need to ingest into your diet for them to become effective.

First of all, there's the age factor. According to experts, "younger people need a higher dose of fish oil than older people." Why? More than likely, it's due to the fact that younger people have higher metabolisms and are more active. The fact that they are more active, leads to their bodies burning higher amounts of calories and fats. On the other hand, older people are typically less active, in turn, they don't need quite as much fish oil to achieve the same benefits.

The second factor that plays a role in deciding on how much omega-3 fatty acids you need is the source, or quality, in which you are taking. Fish oil from its true source, like mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon, may not be as effective as, say, a supplement. And if your source of the natural fish is not reliable, it may even cause more harm than good, especially if it's contaminated with mercury. The source and quality of omega-3 fatty acids is very important.

Fish oil is readily available in capsule and liquid form, but then again, not all are created equal. It's been scientifically proven that the quality and concentration of fish oil over the counter can vary greatly. When choosing a quality fish oil supplement, one should make sure that it's at least health food store grade, and preferably pharmaceutical grade. The higher the quality, the less you should have to ingest to experience the real health benefits.

Your medical condition is the final factor to consider when deciding what dosage of fish oil you need. For example, if you have high cholesterol, are a high risk of heart disease or have high blood pressure, your doctor may prescribe a higher than normal dose for you. Remember, it's up to your doctor to decide. As with any supplement, you should consult your physician, or medical professional first. It's not advised to self prescribe more than is recommended on the label of any over-the-counter supplement.

So, what's the general rule of thumb? The American Heart Association recommends consuming 1–3 grams per day of EPA and DHA. For certain medical conditions, however, higher doses of omega-3 products, up to 4 grams per day, can be used safely, and with good effect. Included the right amount of omega 3 fatty acids can be one of the smartest and most healthy things you ever do for yourself and your body.

TriVita's Omega Prime helps meet the American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for omega-3 fatty acids. One daily dose of Omega Prime provides the amount of Omega-3 recommended by the AHA for healthy individuals, as well as for those who have heart disease or the risk of it.

Vitamin B12

"Dr. Alfred Libby was a medical doctor and substance abuse therapy specialist who worked primarily with heroin addicts – searching for new therapies to improve the detoxification process. He was aware that most addicts were not getting the B-12 they needed through food, but he was extremely reluctant to give them any kind of injection. In the late 1970s, Dr. Libby began to explore an alternative delivery system for vitamin B-12. The goal was to bypass the stomach where this essential nutrient is not easily absorbed."

"In early spring of 1980, Dr. Libby approached his colleagues with his theory that B-12 could be delivered to the bloodstream sublingually (under the tongue). Biochemists and his medical colleagues were quick to dismiss the idea. However, he was persistent and they eventually decided to give his theory a try, although they were convinced it would fail."

"Six weeks later the first study was underway. Shortly after, Dr. Libby's sublingual delivery method was deemed a complete success – blood levels of B-12 increased dramatically. Dr. Libby significantly improved his formula with the addition of B-6 & Folic Acid and was issued a patent in 1984 for his sublingual process."

"And now, from the experts that brought you the original Sublingual B-12 comes TriVita Super Sublingual B-12. With the original, patented delivery system, TriVita Super B provides more B-12 than the average B-12 shot. Studies show that these important nutrients can be measured in the bloodstream in as little as 30 minutes! Plus, it's the first and only B-12 product to combine both major forms of B-12 with B-6, folic acid and ginseng."

"Thanks to Dr. Libby's original, patented delivery system, thousands of people have experienced increased stamina, mental clarity, improved memory and much more"!

The information listed above is from the TriVita web site (www.trivita.com/superb/getsuperb.com/dr_libby.aspx), and the reason I bring this up is because of my wife's son, who has been told that he may have to continue receiving Vitamin B-12 shots the rest of his life. He's only 25! YIKES!

Here's his short story. Eighteen months ago he was in the hospital with what was diagnosed as a bleeding ulcer. The doctors found and repaired the problem, no worries. Fast forward to the present (one month ago) - seventeen months later - his condition returned. This time it was much worse, as he was hospitalized for five days, and was given six units of blood. As the doctors continued to monitor his one month progress, they find out that his blood levels are too low (whatever that means).

That leads us to where I started his story. The doctors feel that he "may need vitamin b12 shot the rest of his life." So with that said, I suggested TriVita's patented Sublingual B12. Is it recommended by the doctors? Will it be as effective as a true vitamin b12 shot? I guess only time will tell. If "TriVita Super B provides more B-12 than the average B-12 shot" he should be fine, and should be getting enough b12 into his system to discontinue the painful shots.

Omega Prime and Cholesterol

If you're fighting high cholesterol, look no further than TriVita's Omega Prime. Omega Prime is a high source of omega-23 fatty acids, considered essential fatty acids. They are essential to human health but cannot be manufactured by the body. For this reason, omega-3 fatty acids must be obtained from food and/or dietary supplements.

According to TriVita's Chief Science Officer, Brazos Minshew, the guidelines for healthy cholesterol have changed. New targets have been established that tell us that perhaps our efforts to manage cholesterol and other blood lipids have been inadequate. This is especially true when we consider the target for LDL (low density lipoprotein), the so-called "bad" cholesterol.

Why should we be concerned with our LDL level? How did we get into such a deplorable state when it comes to managing our cholesterol? How can we use this information to improve our health?

What is LDL?

Low density lipoproteins (LDL) are often considered to be a "bad" form of cholesterol. But this is an extreme mischaracterization of a very beneficial fat in our blood. You see, your body makes important things out of LDL: brain cells and nerves are shielded with LDL cholesterol-based fats. And hormones in your bloodstream and inside your cells are made from LDL cholesterol. So, LDL is not really "bad," just misunderstood!

The dark side of cholesterol metabolism occurs when a person over-produces LDL and when LDL particles become sticky, oxidized and inflamed. This is one cause of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), which leads to heart attack and stroke, peripheral artery disease (PAD) and other diseases of your blood vessels.

Why cholesterol is "high"

We also make hormones from good cholesterol. Most doctors recommend over 1,200 milligrams of omega-3 fats for building healthy hormones and reducing "bad" cholesterol. Omega Prime® contains beneficial omega-3 fats. You may find that you need more Omega Prime every day to build cholesterol into trophic hormones.

Estrogen, progesterone, DHEA and testosterone are examples of trophic hormones. They are made of the same substance: cholesterol. If your body is unable to convert cholesterol into these hormones you may see your blood levels of cholesterol rise. You can bring your cholesterol down and your low hormones up by supporting cholesterol-to-hormone conversion. TriVita can help support healthy hormone metabolism with supplements such as Omega Prime, Vitamin E, Balanced Woman™ and Prostate Health Formula.

The most critical balance of hormones occurs between insulin and glucagon. When we sleep too little, when we are stressed too much and when we eat too much sugar - especially high fructose corn syrup - our insulin levels stay too high for too long and cause insulin resistance. High levels of insulin cause the liver to release high levels of cholesterol and LDL. Oxidized LDL inflames, gets sticky and clogs arteries.

Glucagon is a liver hormone that balances blood sugar and lowers cholesterol and LDL. TriVita supports glucagon metabolism with adaptogens for stress and Leanology™ capsules to sustain healthy blood sugar. They also assist with LDL "stickiness" by using robust levels of Vitamin C. TriVita helps your body reduce inflammation with Betalains found in Nopalea™.

Weight Loss

I've looked at many weight loss programs and have yet to find one that works without making some sort of lifestyle change. If you want to lose weight, there's no magic bullet. As a matter of fact, the most effective way to lose weight and keep it off is through lifestyle changes, like healthier eating habits, eating low-calorie foods, watching your portion sizes, and engaging in regular physical activity. This is certainly no magic pill, but it does work.

Here's something to keep in your mind, even if you use a weight-loss pill, you still have to consume fewer calories than your body uses. That's the fact in order to lose weight. Even if weight-loss pills were to help you lose weight initially, you'd probably have to continue taking them for the weight to stay off. Most often this may not be practical or safe.

The best advice I can give you, if you're concerned about your weight, is to talk to your doctor or healthcare professional. Whether you have 10 pounds or 100 pounds to lose, your doctor of healthcare professional can direct you in the right direction. More than likely, they will suggest that you need to eat a healthy diet, and burn calories through physical activity and exercise.

When it comes to losing weight, there is no easy solution. However, TriVita's Leanology®, can give you the extra added advantage to help you get started on your weight loss journey. Leanology® offers the most advanced system of weight loss products on the market, as part of an easy 3-Step System to help you lose weight the smart and healthy way!

Dietary supplements and weight-loss aids aren't subject to the same rigorous standards as are prescription drugs or medications sold over-the-counter. However, Leanology® products are "scientifically-formulated and physician-approved." They are natural, nutrient based, and contain no stimulants.

Leanology® has been clinically-proven for optimal, healthy weight loss. The Leanology system of products is convenient and easy to use!

With most weight loss products, it's hard to know what the consumer is actually getting, or even if the list of ingredients matches what's in the bottle. There are many weight-loss pills that contain a whole host of ingredients — some with more than 20 herbs, botanicals, vitamins, minerals or other add-ons, such as caffeine or laxatives. It's often hard to determine how these ingredients interact individually and collectively with your body. Using some of these products can be risky, especially if you're taking prescription medications.

This is precisely why the good folks at TriVita have had their weight loss products "scientifically-formulated and physician-approved." This leaves no questions as to whether the product works or not, and also gives the consumer confidence that the ingredients listed on the bottle are actually included in the product.

TriVita makes no outrageous claims! They states facts, backed by science, that are supported by physicians. TriVita is a proven company with proven products. To learn more about TriVita, TriVita products, or TriVita's weight loss system, Leanology, click on the previous links.

Vitamin D and Your Heart

I've been writing about vitamin d and how important it is to get the proper amount of this vitamin to maintain a healthy skeletal system. Well a new study conducted by the Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City suggests that "Vitamin D contributes to a strong and healthy heart as well – and that inadequate levels of the vitamin may significantly increase a person's risk of stroke, heart disease, and death, even among people who've never had heart disease."

This study has been going on for more than a year, and was conducted on "27,686 patients who were 50 years of age or older with no prior history of cardiovascular disease." The participants within this study all had routine blood tests to check for vitamin d. There were three different groups created - "normal (over 30 nanograms per milliliter), low (15-30 ng/ml), or very low (less than 15 ng/ml)" - where participants were placed according to their individual results.

"Researchers found that patients with very low levels of Vitamin D were 77 percent more likely to die, 45 percent more likely to develop coronary artery disease, and 78 percent were more likely to have a stroke than patients with normal levels. Patients with very low levels of Vitamin D were also twice as likely to develop heart failure than those with normal Vitamin D levels."

Previously, medical experts said that vitamin D supplementation should be taken, and/or increased to help promote bone health and ward off diseases like osteoporosis. However, since the new study that was presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Conference on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 in Orlando, Florida, you may see a shift in the way medical professionals will look at vitamin d.

I'm not suggesting that you run out and purchase an exorbitant amount of vitamin d, but what I am suggesting, is that you take another look at this vitamin, and ask your doctor if it really is as important as this new study suggests. I'm not a medical professional, nor do I suggest that I am, however, when I read article regarding health and wellness, I do a little more investigating.

Our health is nothing to take for granted. As we all know, the healthcare industry has enough struggles of its own. If we can do our own research, listen to our primary care professional, and take every preventable measure to ensure that we get the proper vitamins and nutrients each and every day, we will be doing our part to improving not only the healthcare industry, but also our health.

Vitamin D has always been know as the sunshine vitamin, but many of us do not get enough sunshine to get the recommended requirements of this all important vitamin. So, as winter approaches in the northern hemisphere, may I suggest TriVita's VitaCal-Mag D.

VitaCal-Mag D provides five forms of chelated calcium, over 20 bone-fortifying vitamins and minerals, 100% RDI of Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Vitamin D, and Chlorophyll-coated tablets that protect valuable nutrients, time-releasing optimal absorption. TriVita's VitaCal-Mag D is also absorbable so you can get the nutrition you need for healthier bones.

According to TriVita, "the key to bone health is calcium and Vitamin D. These are the two essential ingredients that will help you maintain the strength of your skeletal system, ensure regular cellular activity, proper cardiac function, and preserve the health of other vital body systems."

TriVita has known for some time about vitamin d and its affect on the heart, as you can see by the quote above. The study listed above backs up what TriVita has been advocating for some time.

You can learn all about vitamin supplements and vitamin D by going to the TriVita Products website.

Weight Loss

Maintaining your weight especially during the holiday season can be quite difficult. Stress related situations surrounding the holiday season can cause one to eat more often, which leads to extra pounds. Avoiding stressful situations, learning how to eat more healthily, and exercising will not only help you maintain your weight, but could lead to weight loss.

Stress can be caused by many different things. However, when it comes to the holidays, family, shopping, and meal preparation are the leading candidates of stress. To avoid becoming overly stressed out by these "big three", take it to God and ask Him to help you through each situation. If there are unresolved hurts from the past, ask God to help you forgive that person, and then enjoy them for who they are. Remember, none of us are perfect, and forgiveness can be the best medicine.

Weight loss is possible during the holidays if you continue to exercise, and avoid junk food if stressful situations do arise. Continued exercise will not only help you burn excess calories, but it will also help relieve stress. "Exercise can decrease 'stress hormones' like cortisol, and increase endorphins, your body's 'feel-good' chemicals, giving your mood a natural boost."[1] And we all know, when you do rigorous exercise, you burn calories, which can lead to weigh loss.

Another way to lose weight is to use TriVita's three step weight loss system, Leanology®. Leanology® shakes provide high quality proteins and Leanology nutritional chews contain specific fats to help turn off hunger signals and to help thwart cravings. Leanology weight loss capsules help reduce body weight and fat and are made with natural, stimulant-free ingredients including Converta™, The Fat Burning Accelerator.

A special weight-loss nutrient is Vitamin D. Most people would make enough Vitamin D with 20 minutes of sunshine morning and evening with 40% of their skin exposed to the sun's rays. Vitamin D also acts as a weight loss nutrient by balancing the blood sugar, reducing your appetite and improving human metabolism. This essential vitamin also improves your immune system.

People are exposed to less sunshine during the wintertime. This problem becomes worse the further north we go because of the shorter winter days in northern latitudes. Add the extra sun-blocking-layers of clothes to combat cold temperatures to the use of Vitamin D-blocking sunscreen and it is easy to see why people overeat, gain extra weight and even suffer seasonal illness because of a compromised immune system during the winter.

"To combat these very real circumstances that result in weight gain during the holidays we simply must take supplemental Vitamin D. Leanology® caps contain 750 IU of Vitamin D per six capsules. I suggest taking six capsules daily to supply a minimum level of Vitamin D during winter and to curb the appetite." [2]

Nutritional Supplements

There's a new multi-nutrient complex daily vitamin supplement that's more powerful than you average nutritional supplement.

According to TriVita's Chief Science Officer, "We need a multiple nutrient supplement every day to serve as a foundation for health and to combat the nutrient demands of a stressful life." And that's exactly why TriVita has created this new and more powerful nutritional supplement.

Below is information on Wellavoh™, the new super-nutritional supplement. The information is provided by TriVita's weekly health and wellness report.

How Nutrients Help Relieve Stress
Stress is defined as change that is seen by your body or mind as a threat - large or small, imaginary or real - or a change in your environment that triggers a rapid use of your reserves. Stress creates a demand on your resources. Soon, these resources become exhausted and you get sick.

Distress can come from your environment, your body or your mind. Rather than being just a single event, stress accumulates over time from all three sources. It strangles the joy and pleasure from your days and nights. It makes you miserable, and then it makes you sick. Once you are sick, stress keeps you from responding as well to medical care. Yes, stress is a killer!

Nutrients to the rescue
The opposite of stress is homeostasis. So, while stress is constantly trying to pull you apart, homeostasis is constantly working to put you back together. Homeostasis is the priority process your body uses to combat stress.

Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are essential for homeostasis. If we have the nutrients we need at the moment we need them, we will thrive! Conversely, if we do not have the proper nutrient base in our system every day we will suffer loss of energy, poor mental performance and an increased risk for disease.

Supplements
The word supplement means an addition to something to make up for a deficiency. All supplements are an important addition to a healthy diet. They make up for the deficiency we face because of poor nutrient density in our foods. They also help out when we miss the mark of diet perfection.

Supplements are no substitute for good dietary choices. We simply must commit ourselves to eating a healthy diet. As you review your food choices for the past week, ask yourself, "Did I eat the right amount of fruits and vegetables every day?"

·         5 servings for children

·         7 servings for women

·         9 servings for men

If you can say "yes" - congratulations! If you are like most people you did not reach that goal. And, if you are like most of us, you did not eat all of your fruits and vegetables from an organic source; so, the fruits and vegetables may have been of low nutrient value.

We need a multiple nutrient supplement every day to serve as a foundation for health and to combat the nutrient demands of a stressful life.

A new supplement
Staying on top of our nutrient reserve is important. Our body makes millions of new cells every day - heart cells, brain cells, bone and blood cells. Stress kills millions of vulnerable cells every day. Every time a cell dies it should be replaced. If you do not have the right amount of nutrients to construct a new cell, you will either make an incomplete cell or none at all. The outcome is bad in either case; so, we really need to keep all nutrients on board at all times. This is why we created Sonoran Bloom™ Wellavoh™ (wel-lah voh), a new multi-nutrient complex for men and women.

The destructive forces of stress come from inside and outside your body. The nutrient complexes of Wellavoh can help you build a bulwark against stress as it tries to pull you apart. Wellavoh supports homeostasis as the innate wisdom of your body tries to keep you functioning at your peak.

One more reason...
Perhaps an even more important reason exists for maintaining a robust supply of nutrients in our system daily. According to a recent report, chemical switches on our DNA are activated by nutrients. If a single nutrient is missing at the critical moment it is needed, one of these chemical switches will fail. This results in a change in our DNA that promotes disease - for up to three generations of our children! So, it is vital that we and our children have our nutrients available every day to reduce the impact of stress while promoting vitality today, health tomorrow and a solid wellness foundation for generations to come!

Omega-3 Benefits

What benefits does fish oil offer our bodies? What is fish oil all about and what makes it good for us? You may have heard it on the news, or read it in a magazine, but how good is fish oil for you? These are a few questions I'll try to answer in this short little article.

All around the world, fish oil has received attention regarding its benefits to achieving a healthier lifestyle. Health expert and scientists have done many studies on omega-3 fatty acids (the key nutrient in fish oil). So what's in fish oil that makes it so beneficial to our bodies?

EPA is an omega 3 fatty acid. EPA, otherwise known as eicosapentaenoic acid, is mostly found in fish oil. According to the University of Maryland Health Center, "increased intake of EPA has beneficial effects on coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Most people in the Western world do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids in their diet." [1]

Omega fatty acids can be obtained from eating fish like salmon, cod liver, herring, and mackerel, or by taking a supplement. The reason many people turn to omega-3 supplements is because consumption of certain fish can be toxic, especially when consumed in large amounts.

One supplement that I recommend is TriVita's Omega Prime. Omega Prime is created from the highest grade of fish oil, and uses only contaminant-free fish oil that has undergone a 10 stage distilling process. So, if what you've heard about fish contamination, do not fear. You can be assured that Omega Prime is free of all contamination.

TriVita's Omega Prime contains a "premier and unique blend of four different types of the most highly regarded Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) oils – Fish, Flaxseed, Evening Primrose and Perilla Seed."

The importance of omega-3 fatty acids as part of your diet are becoming more prevalent. More and more studies are beginning to surface, and diets, typical of modern America - ones high in omega-6 fatty acids and low in omega-3s - are linked to higher risks of cancer, diabetes, and immunity disorders.

But now you can help protect your body from these horrible diseases, by adding omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. You do not have to be a fish eater, or even enjoy fish to reap the benefits provided by omega-3. But, you should do something to introduce these very important EPAs into your diet.

I hope you've learned something about EPA, EFA, and omega-3. If you would like additional information on Omega Prime and any of the TriVita nutritional products, you can go to TriVita Products. TriVita ensures that you get the safest, freshest, and most effective products available on the market today. Each product is made under the strictest quality controls in the nutritional supplement industry.

Fighting Inflammation

Sonoran Bloom Nopalea is touted as one of the best inflammation fighters. However, most likely it's the toxins in your body that causes inflammation. Fighting inflammation and getting natural pain relief are plausible attributes; getting to the the root cause is of the utmost importance.

Every week, Brazos Minshew, TriVita's Chief Science Officer, writes a health and wellness newsletter. This week is no different. In the newsletter, Mr. Minshew delves into the causes, triggers, and ways to fight inflammation. The newsletter is posted in its entirety.

Recently, a series of forest fires ravaged the landscape in Southern California. One particular fire burned many fine homes. The firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the fire and they were making progress. However, with the dawn came a change in circumstances: an increase in heat, a reduction in humidity and hot, dry winds from the south brought dry air and a fresh supply of oxygen that intensified the fire. Soon, a firestorm erupted creating flaming tornadoes.

That is the perfect illustration of the inflammation that can occur in the human body. What may begin as a single spark of inflammation may erupt into an inflammatory disease that engulfs our entire body and threatens our life. Efforts to combat the inflammation may be affected by external forces that fan the flames until we are consumed.

Causes of inflammation
There are four common causes of inflammation:

·         Trauma or injury

·         Toxins and poisons

·         Deficiencies of various kinds

·         Emotional distress

Any of these factors may trigger the start of inflammation or increase the intensity of the heat by adding fuel to the fire.

An example of this may be inflammation triggered by toxins and fueled by emotional distress. Gout is a form of inflammation strongly linked to toxicity. For example, gout may be triggered in susceptible people by environmental toxins like carbon tetrachloride or dietary toxins such as HCFS (high fructose corn syrup) found in soft drinks. Gout may also be triggered by depression associated with loss, or by anxiety associated with chronic emotional distress. A new round of gout may be triggered by simple trauma to a previously affected toe or possibly a Vitamin C deficiency.

Adding multiple sources of inflammation together may trigger a firestorm of inflammation that rages out of control - creating serious signs of disease.

Triggers: known and unknown

The firefighters mentioned above lost that particular battle with the forest fire because they could not foresee all of the influences hampering their efforts. The same is true with us:

·         We can not always foresee all of the inflammation triggers we face

·         We can not always tell when we trigger the process of inflammation

While we may remember our last soft drink, we may not know when we last breathed carbon tetrachloride, ate fruits and vegetables deficient in Vitamin C, or created micro-trauma by our sleeping position, sedentary lifestyle or choice of shoes. We may also not readily discern the impact of internalized stress.

I recently encountered three people who had different forms of inflammation. One individual suffered from episodes of gout, the second from chronic colitis and the third from osteoarthritis of the knees. They all experienced fast and profound benefits from Nopalea with its anti-inflammatory Betalains. They also later experienced a flare-up of symptoms when their life changed. In all three cases the inflammation appeared to be triggered by severe emotional upset: loss of a spouse, loss of a sibling and loss of a job.

Trying to quench the fire of inflammation created by these emotional extremes with a minimum serving of Nopalea was like trying to quench a forest fire with a single pail of water! We need to judge the severity of the inflammation and meet it with the appropriate anti-inflammatory response if we are to be successful. Don't be afraid to use 3 ounces or 6 ounces every day for a real "Betalain-Boost"!

Conclusion

When we experience any sign or symptom of distress we should interpret it as a communication from our body to our mind that something is wrong. The frequency, intensity and duration of the inflammation will determine how we should escalate our response.

As detectives we solve the mystery of pain by analyzing the four causes of inflammation. However, we must also realize that our ability to solve these puzzles is limited by our knowledge. The more we know about how we work, the greater the opportunity we have to discern the causes of inflammation, create an appropriate, strategic response and successfully put out the fire. I encourage you to listen to my audio book, "Body Systems 101" for an introduction to this concept. Call 1-800-991-7116 to find out how to get this audio book.

I hope you learned something about inflammation from Mr. Minshew. If not, my I suggest calling the number listed above and getting his audio book. He has been studying the causes of inflammation for some time, and he offers some great insight on the the number one medical issue most people face.

Nutritional Vitamin Supplements

Looking to start a home business? Now may be a good time to start one, especially if you want to get into the health and wellness industry. Consumers are purchasing more nutritional vitamin supplements than a year ago.

Even though we are faced with challenging economic times, 65% of adult consumers (up slightly from 64% in 2008) take dietary supplements, according to a new consumer survey conducted by Ipsos-Public Affairs for the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), Washington, D.C.

According to results from the 2009 CRN Consumer Survey on Dietary Supplements, the economy prompted 27 percent of dietary supplement consumers to alter their supplement purchasing habits. Among that group, purchasing habits changed in the following ways:

  • 59 percent (of the 27 percent) reported they are purchasing fewer supplements as a means to save money;
  • 31 percent (of the 27 percent) indicated they are now purchasing less expensive brands;
  • 26 percent (of the 27 percent) said they have been purchasing store brand supplements;
  • 23 percent (of the 27 percent) indicated they rely on coupons and other value-added promotions;
  • 22 percent (of the 27 percent) responded they only buy supplements when they are on sale;
  • 5 percent (of the 27 percent) responded they are purchasing more supplements to maintain health; and
  • 4 percent (of the 27 percent) responded they have stopped purchasing supplements because of the economy.

Supplement consumers indicated the three factors most important to them when purchasing supplements are: the price, the supplements facts box (i.e., dosage, daily value, etc.) and the label claims (maintain heart health, maintain joint health, etc.). The online survey also showed a slightly higher percentage of adults who label themselves as supplement users, with 65 percent classifying themselves as such.

In 2008, 64 percent of American adults identified themselves as supplement users. These numbers are also consistent with previous years' findings, as 68 percent and 66 percent of Americans identified themselves as supplement users in 2007 and 2006, respectively.

"We're pleased that consumers continue to place emphasis on their health, even in uncertain economic times, and that dietary supplements continue to play a role in their overall wellness regimen," said Judy Blatman, senior vice president, communications, CRN. "According to our survey, consumers, including supplement users, report to be taking necessary steps towards good health, such as trying to eat a balanced diet and getting regular exercise. We're encouraged that dietary supplements continue to be a part of that equation for many."

This is terrific news for anyone involved in the health and wellness industry, especialy for the people trying to build a successful home business. As more and more baby-boomers contiue to age, I believe that the numbers will continue to go up. Now is the time to get involved in the health and wellnes industry and start a home business.
